Prince Aeneas was born to the Trojan king and the goddess Aphrodite. After his defeat in the Trojan War, he drifted to Carthage on the coast of North Africa. Here he met Queen Didone and fell in love with her, but in the end he abandoned her in order to rebuild Troia, and after seven years of wandering he arrived in Italy, where he married a princess. He married a princess there and laid the foundations of the Roman Empire. Didone, on the other hand, in an act of grief, threw herself into a blazing fire. The Metastasio libretto based on this story was composed by as many as 100 composers, including Galuppi, Hasse, and Paisiello, and was very popular at the time.
