Description:
A story from the 15th century. A meeting is being held on the island of Negroponte in the Republic of Venice, which is under siege by the Ottoman army led by Maomet II. The commander-in-chief is Paolo Erisso. The commander, Condormiello, was considering surrendering, but it was the young commander, Calvo, who disagreed. Calvo has feelings for Elisso's daughter Anna, and Elisso wants to marry her to Calvo. Anna, however, is in love with someone else. He calls himself Umberto, a young lord, but in fact he is her enemy, Maomet II. Composed in 1820, "Maomet II" is Rossini's mature work, the longest and most serious of all his works. However, its premiere in Venice was a disaster, and Rossini arranged and edited the work six years later in the style of a French grand opera. The overture was changed, the lines were changed to French, the setting was moved from Negroponte to Corinth, and other major alterations were made. This version was a great success and was later translated into Italian, where it became very popular. The 1822 version with a happy ending also exists, but the 2017 performance at the Wirtbart Rossini Festival will be the premiere version, with beautiful arias and a tragic ending, just as Rossini had originally conceived it. The singers performed with great passion and balance. This is a record of a remarkable performance, with passionate performances by the singers and a well-balanced virtuosi brunensis. Naxos Japan
