The third movement, with its masculine and majestic ideas and boundless longing, was used in a film score and became more widely popular. The fourth symphony, full of melancholy, emotion, introspection, and resignation, shows the state of resignation in the last years of the composer's life. This disc contains two symphonies by Brahms. The combination of Bhm's soulful conducting and the Vienna Philharmonic's traditional sound and expressive excellence won the 1976 Recording Academy Award. Universal Music
