All music for the first time! Arnoncourt and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe are best known for their 1990 recording of Beethoven's complete symphonies, which made an impact on the world and changed the course of orchestral performance. But two years prior to that, the orchestra had produced an astonishingly wonderful collection of Schubert's complete works. The rehearsals were so intense that the members of the orchestra recalled them as "life-changing," and Arnoncourt's interpretation of Schubert's music was fully realized with the agility and clear sound of the small orchestra. The recordings were originally recorded by the Austrian Radio Foundation (ORF) and remastered by award-winning veteran engineer Paul Bailey (formerly of EMI Abbey Road Studios, now of Re:Sound). Orchestra member Christian Eisenberger was present for the remastering, which beautifully evokes the "COE sound of the Arnoncourt era. The 24-page booklet (in English, German, and French) includes recollections by members of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe who attended this July 1988 concert.Arnoncourt's complete Schubert symphonies have been recorded with two prestigious orchestras, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1992 and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra from 2003 to 2005, and it is very interesting to compare them.
